In a second that immediately became viral, Smackdown served up a surprise when Randy Orton, once again living up to his name as the Viper, faked John Cena and delivered a crushing RKO out of nowhere.
The nostalgia was felt in the segment at the beginning. Cena, who was wearing a shirt that read “The Last Time is Now,” had the WWE championship and was obviously emotional as he spoke to the WWE Universe about a legendary career. The crowd cheered and behind him stood none other than Randy Orton — a former foe turned ally for the night at least that’s what it seemed.
As Cena soaked up the cheers and celebrated what might be one of his last SmackDown showings, Orton seemed to wipe his face in a gesture of respect — or even emotion. But fans who knew of Orton’s history knew something wasn’t right.
In a single smooth move, he took off to the textbook RKO that put away Cena on the mat. The cheers turned to gasps. The crowd rose up into a cacophony of shock and wonder as Orton towered over the dead body of Cena, a look of stone upon his face, not impressed with the betrayal he just committed.
What was supposed to be one of celebration became a savage reminder: Randy Orton is never to be trusted, as simple as that, regardless of history, regardless of occasion.
The Viper strikes when you’re least expecting it – and tonight, John Cena learnt that lesson yet again.
